Earth's Rotation and Revolution

Earth has two important movements:

Common misconception: Seasons are NOT caused by Earth being closer to or farther from the Sun. In fact, Earth is slightly closer to the Sun in January (Southern Hemisphere summer). Seasons are caused by Earth's axial tilt.

Earth's Axial Tilt

Earth's axis is tilted at 23.5ยฐ relative to its orbital plane around the Sun. This tilt always points in the same direction in space (toward Polaris, the North Star). As Earth orbits the Sun, different hemispheres are tilted toward or away from the Sun at different times of year.

The Southern and Northern Hemispheres always have opposite seasons. When it is summer in South Africa (December), it is winter in Europe.

Solstice comes from the Latin "sol" (sun) + "sistere" (to stand still) โ€” the Sun appears to reach its highest or lowest point and then reverse. Equinox means "equal night" โ€” day and night are each approximately 12 hours everywhere on Earth.

Why Daylight Hours Change

Because Earth's axis is tilted, the circle of illumination (the boundary between day and night) does not pass through the poles. In summer, a location in the Southern Hemisphere spends more of its daily rotation on the sunlit side โ†’ more daylight hours. In winter, the opposite is true.

Why Seasons Occur: Two Key Reasons

When a hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun, two things happen that make it warmer:

Time Zones

Because Earth is a sphere rotating 360ยฐ in 24 hours, it rotates 15ยฐ per hour. The world is divided into approximately 24 time zones, each roughly 15ยฐ of longitude wide. Countries to the east of you experience sunrise earlier. South Africa uses SAST (South Africa Standard Time) = UTC+2 โ€” two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

South Africa does not use daylight saving time โ€” our clocks stay the same all year round.
