Micro-organisms

The invisible world of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists — how they harm us, help us, and keep ecosystems alive.

What are micro-organisms?

Micro-organisms (microbes) are living things too small to be seen with the naked eye — you need a microscope to observe them. Despite their tiny size, they are found almost everywhere: in the air, water, soil, on surfaces, and inside our bodies.

Key point: Micro-organisms are living things. Like all living things they carry out life processes — feeding, respiration, growth, reproduction and excretion.

Types of micro-organisms

There are four main types studied at this level:

🦠 Bacteria

Single-celled prokaryotes (no nucleus). Found everywhere. Some cause diseases (TB, cholera), others are useful (yoghurt, soil nutrients).

🔴 Viruses

Not technically living — they need a host cell to reproduce. Cause diseases like AIDS (HIV), influenza and COVID-19.

🍄 Fungi

Includes moulds and yeasts. Reproduce by spores. Some are harmful (ringworm, athlete's foot), many are useful (bread, beer, penicillin).

🌊 Protista

Mostly single-celled eukaryotes (have a nucleus). Includes algae and amoeba. Some cause diseases like malaria (Plasmodium).

Harmful micro-organisms

Disease-causing micro-organisms are called pathogens. They are found on handrails, ATMs, door handles, in contaminated water and food.

Waterborne diseases like cholera and diarrhoea are major causes of child deaths globally. Effective prevention includes washing hands regularly, sterilising surfaces, and ensuring clean water supplies.

Not all microbes are harmful — many are essential:

Scientists and micro-organisms

Louis Pasteur proved that microbes cause disease (germ theory) and developed pasteurisation — heating food to kill harmful bacteria. His work transformed medicine and food safety. Edward Jenner developed the first vaccine (smallpox) by observing that milkmaids who caught cowpox rarely got smallpox.

Remember: Micro-organisms decompose dead organisms and recycle nutrients — this is essential for ecosystem balance (links to food webs and ecosystems).
