Input, output and control devices, correct connections versus short circuits, and how to draw a circuit using accepted electrical symbols.
Every electrical circuit is a system: something provides energy, something uses it, and something controls the flow. Components are grouped by their role in the circuit:
For a circuit to work, current must flow in one continuous, unbroken loop from the cell, through the components, and back to the cell. This is called a closed circuit. If the loop is broken anywhere (a wire disconnected, a switch open), it is an open circuit and no current flows.
A short circuit happens when current finds an unintended low-resistance path that bypasses the output device โ for example, if the two terminals of a lamp are connected directly to each other by a stray wire. Almost all the current rushes through this shortcut instead of through the lamp, so the lamp stays dark, the wires overheat, and the cell drains very quickly. Short circuits are dangerous and can start fires.
Circuits are drawn using standard, internationally accepted symbols so that anyone, anywhere, can read the diagram the same way. You must be able to recognise and draw these symbols:

Connecting wires are drawn as straight lines, and every component is placed in the wire loop โ never floating off to the side. Junctions where wires join are shown with a solid dot.
When building a real circuit, always: (1) connect components in a single closed loop, (2) check the cell's positive and negative terminals are the right way round for polarised components, (3) place the switch so it can safely cut off the whole circuit, and (4) test with a low-cost output device (like a lamp) before adding more components. Once built, the physical circuit should always be redrawn as a symbol diagram โ this is how technologists record and communicate a design.
