A single house project produces a whole SET of civil drawings — a site plan, a floor plan, door/window schedules, an electrical layout, a drainage layout, sections and a roof plan — each showing the same building from a different angle of information. A builder, a surveyor, an electrician and a plumber all read the same set, but each focuses on a different sheet.
Perhaps the single most important reading skill in civil work is levels: NGL, FFL, SSL, DPC and IL are all heights measured from ONE fixed datum. Once you understand that every level on every sheet in the set shares that same reference point, you can calculate any height difference — wall heights, drainage falls, floor-to-ceiling heights — with simple subtraction, without ever needing to remeasure on site.
Each sheet below prints as a full-scale A3 reference — but for this chapter, the task is different: instead of redrawing it, work through the prompt written on the sheet and write your answers on paper.
