Chapter 7 covered the basics of a building's plan and fittings. This chapter goes underground and upstairs: foundations, retaining walls, staircases, multi-storey sections, drainage, and a complete small working drawing set.
A floor plan tells a builder WHERE everything goes. It says almost nothing about HOW it actually gets built — how deep the foundations need to go, how a staircase is proportioned for safety, or how a wall below ground is kept dry. That's exactly the gap this chapter fills: real, buildable construction detail.
Several of this chapter's sheets aren't really about drawing technique at all — they're about numbers with real legal and safety weight behind them: a staircase's rise-and-going comfort formula, a minimum headroom clearance, a maximum baluster gap. Getting these details right on a drawing is what keeps the finished building safe to actually use.
Each exercise below prints as a full-scale A3 sheet — the same format used in EGD practical assessments. The reference thumbnail shows the completed drawing; redraw it full-size on paper using correct line types and hatching conventions. Use your printer's "Actual Size" setting (not "Fit to Page").
